- humble_lima_beanHonestly didn't know Beijing had a legit Sri Lankan spot until this place popped up recently. They're calling themselves the first Sri Lankan restaurant in the city but that's kinda underselling it — they're really the only real-deal Sri Lankan place in all of mainland China. The only other one on the same level is over in Hong Kong. There's another spot in Shanghai run by a Sri Lankan guy but it's more like Sri Lankan vibes than actual Sri Lankan food, and some Bangladeshi and Indian places in Guangzhou throw "Sri Lankan" on the menu but it's not the same thing. The space isn't huge but they've got a nice little island/South Asian feel to it, plus a private room in the back. All three staff at the front are Sri Lankan and their Mandarin is honestly super good. Went for the three most iconic Sri Lankan dishes. First up was the chicken kottu. If there's one flavor that screams Sri Lankan street food, it's kottu. It's not just the national dish, it's basically a whole audio experience — on the streets of Lanka you can hear the cooks chopping up the flatbreads on a hot griddle with two metal blades, like a rhythm going. The magic is in the godamba roti, this super chewy Sri Lankan flatbread that gets chopped up and tossed with tons of fresh veggies, eggs, and a special curry at high heat. Cinnara's chicken kottu is 58 yuan and comes with a sunny-side-up egg and a grilled chicken leg on the side, so it's basically a street-style kottu but leveled up. The shredded roti soaked up all the curry flavor and was incredible, and I couldn't stop eating the chicken leg — super juicy and the spices were on point. The dish comes with three sauces, this dark curry and this red one that had a nice kick, plus a mint yogurt sauce that's super refreshing and cuts through the richness. Loved the vibe here and the food was genuinely something different. If you're looking to try actual Sri Lankan food in Beijing, this is the place.
