Standing as Hebei Province's flagship cultural institution, Hebei Museum traces its origins to 1953 and was elevated in 2024 to a nationally co-funded museum of significance. With a collection of some 340,000 objects, it safeguards the material legacy of northern China from the Shang Dynasty through the Qing era, comparable in scope to a regional British Museum or Madrid's Museo Arqueológico, but with a uniquely northern Chinese character. The museum's two wings together span over 30,000 square meters of dignified exhibition space. Among its ten permanent galleries, two stand out as world-class showcases: "The Great Han Tombs of Mancheng" displays the spectacular burial goods of Prince Liu Sheng and his wife, including the gold-threaded jade suit — the earliest and most complete example ever excavated in China — alongside the iconic Changxin Palace Lamp, whose ingenious design predates modern environmental controls by two millennia. Equally mesmerizing is "The Mighty Zhongshan State," featuring bronze masterpieces of the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). The intricate gold-inlaid dragon-and-phoenix table base and tiger-attacking-deer screen rival the finest Etruscan metalwork in craftsmanship and mystery, representing a civilization that flourished in Hebei long before the Qin unification. Other highlights include vividly preserved Northern Dynasties murals from a princely tomb and the Five Dynasties-period stone-carved musicians from Quyang — treasures that illuminate centuries often overshadowed by the more famous Tang and Song eras. Together they create a panorama of northern Chinese civilization rivaling the regional collections of any European national museum. Practical information: Located at 4 East Street, Chang'an District in Shijiazhuang, the museum is directly accessible via Metro Line 1 (Bowuyuan Station). It opens Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed Mondays. Admission is free, but advance online booking via the official WeChat account is required for all visitors — foreign guests must present their original passport. Photography without flash, selfie sticks, or tripods is permitted; food and touching exhibits are not. For the best experience, allocate at least three hours and begin with the second-floor Han Tombs and Zhongshan State galleries.
