Haikou Century Park opened in 2002, taking its name from the dramatic Century Bridge that arches across the Haidian River at its heart. The bridge, with its twin cable-stayed pylons, resembles a smaller cousin of Copenhagen's Øresund crossing and serves as the park's defining landmark. Built on reclaimed coastal land as part of Haikou's "returning the sea to the people" initiative, the park reflects a post-millennial push in Chinese urban planning to reclaim waterfronts for public use, much as Barcelona transformed its harbourfront for the 1992 Olympics or Hamburg revitalised its HafenCity district. It now stands as a model of tropical civic design. Architecturally, the park unfurls in a ribbon-like strip along the shoreline, with Century Bridge as its visual axis. Visitors will find sun-drenched lawns ideal for picnicking, elevated timber boardwalks tracing the tidal line, a football pitch, basketball courts, jogging paths, children's sand pits, and shaded pergolas for rest. A 2024 upgrade transformed the site into a "24-hour boundless park," adding refined landscape lighting and improved accessibility. The result is a layered space where tropical flora meets modern infrastructure in a layout reminiscent of Lisbon's Tagus-side promenade, though set against swaying coconut palms rather than Atlantic azulejos. Culturally, Century Park has become Haikou's de facto seaside salon. The lawns host music festivals, heritage craft markets, and impromptu tai chi sessions, while photographers flock here at dusk for the bridge-versus-sunset tableau. The adjoining Cloud Cave Library, a sinuous concrete-and-glass structure by Chinese studio MAD Architects, has earned international acclaim and draws design pilgrims from across Asia, making the park a rare convergence of natural scenery and contemporary architectural culture. Together they form a cultural node on par with Bilbao's Guggenheim-and-riverfront pairing, though on a more everyday scale. Visiting is refreshingly simple. The park is free and open around the clock, with no ticket required. Reach it by bus to "Century Park Station" or by taxi to "Century Park Music Square"; drivers should arrive early on holidays as parking is limited. Multilingual signage is generally available, though the adjacent Cloud Cave Library requires advance online booking and occasionally closes for maintenance, so check ahead. Comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket for sea breezes are advisable. Come for the golden hour, ideally between 17:30 and 19:30, when the setting sun ignites Haikou Bay in crimson and the Century Bridge flickers to life in choreographed colour. Cycle or jog the coastal boardwalk, picnic on the grass, fly a kite, then linger for the night skyline. Be warned that August brings fierce tropical sun, so pack sunscreen and water; after 22:00, keep music low to respect locals. Few places better capture Hainan's easy tropical rhythm.
