Hangzhou Songcheng is a 300-acre AAAA-rated theme park in Hangzhou's Zhijiang resort area, dedicated entirely to the culture of the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE)—a Chinese golden age roughly contemporaneous with England's Norman period, the height of Norman Sicily, and the era of the Crusades. The Song capital Lin'an, modern Hangzhou, was so dazzling that the Venetian explorer Marco Polo, visiting in the late 13th century, called it "the finest and most splendid city in the world." While no original Song buildings survive in Hangzhou, unlike the medieval stone structures preserved across Europe, the park fills this gap with painstaking reconstructions, much as France's Puy du Fou or Germany's Tripsdrill resurrect vanished eras.
