Some 270 million years ago, this region lay beneath a shallow tropical sea. As the seabed lifted and rainwater slowly dissolved the limestone over geological epochs, it sculpted a forest of razor-edged spires across 350 square kilometers—a process geologists call karstification, the same phenomenon that produced Croatia's Plitvice Lakes and Ireland's Burren, though on an altogether grander scale. Today this protected zone forms the heart of the UNESCO-listed "South China Karst."

Nearby, the aptly named "A Hair's Breadth from Disaster" boulder teeters above visitors, and the tranquil Sword Peak Pool mirrors its namesake pinnacles.
Lesser Stone Forest offers a gentler counterpoint, with open lawns and pools framing the celebrated Ashima Stone—a slender pillar said to embody a beloved Sani heroine turned to rock by love's tragedy, a legend that echoes Romeo and Juliet in its poignant resonance. Ascend Busiao Mountain (1,797 m), the park's highest point, for sweeping vistas and a rare chance to inspect ancient marine fossils embedded in the rock—a tangible reminder that these mighty peaks were once sea floor.
