Xinxiang Park — China Travel

Established in 1958 during the early years of the People's Republic, Xinxiang People's Park emerged alongside other great socialist-era civic gardens that reshaped Chinese cities after 1949. In spirit and purpose, it echoes London's Victorian municipal parks or Berlin's Tiergarten — democratic green lungs created for ordinary workers and families. After more than sixty years of growth, the park has matured into Xinxiang's most recognisable public space, carrying the memories of several generations within its leafy boundaries. The 110-mu artificial lake forms the park's serene centrepiece, framed by a lakeside pavilion, artificial rockeries, and seasonal plantings reminiscent of the classical gardens of Suzhou. Lotus blossoms dominate in summer, chrysanthemums burst forth in autumn, and snow-blanketed willows transform the scene in winter. Themed groves of pomegranates, bamboo, and bonsai provide quiet corners for contemplation, while two broad plazas host morning tai chi and evening square dancing — a quintessentially Chinese ritual of public leisure. A 60-metre Ferris wheel rises as the park's signature landmark, offering panoramic views across Xinxiang's modest skyline — humble compared to the London Eye but beloved locally. The on-site zoo serves as a regional breeding base for Manchurian tigers and houses around fifty species, including lions, bears, and monkeys. A separate aquarium, vintage pirate-ship rides, bumper cars, paddleboats, and electric boats round out the entertainment for visitors of all ages. The newly opened People's Teahouse (2025) revives a tradition reminiscent of Beijing's historic teahouses or Vienna's coffee houses, where conversation and performance intertwine. Guests can sample regional teas while watching Henan opera and Sichuan-style face-changing acts, bringing China's intangible cultural heritage into a relaxed public setting. This cultural addition elevates the park from a simple leisure ground to a living showcase of Central Plains performing arts. The main park is free and open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. The zoo charges around ¥5 per adult (children under 1.1 m free), while the aquarium costs roughly ¥37.5. Buses 5, 6, 8, 25, 34, and 111 stop at "People's Park," and free parking is available at the west gate. Most vendors accept WeChat Pay and Alipay, so foreign visitors should bring cash or arrange mobile payment in advance. Early mornings between 06:00 and 09:00 and evenings after 17:00 offer the most pleasant temperatures and the liveliest local atmosphere. Summer evenings are ideal for lake cruises and teahouse visits, when lanterns glow across the water. A relaxed half-day route: enter at the south gate, stroll to the lakeside pavilion, enjoy tea at the teahouse, visit the zoo or aquarium, then ride the Ferris wheel as the city lights flicker on below.
