Mount Sanqing earns its name from three peaks said to resemble the Three Pure Ones of Taoist cosmology seated upon their thrones. The mountain entered UNESCO's World Heritage roster in 2008 as China's eighth natural site, joining peers like Yellowstone and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. For over a millennium, Taoist adepts—including the celebrated alchemist Ge Hong of the Jin Dynasty—established hermitages here, leaving behind a remarkable ensemble of stone temples such as Sanqing Palace that still draw pilgrims and historians alike. The mountain's signature spectacle is its fantastical granite sculpture garden. Weathering over a billion years has produced formations resembling the Eastern Goddess and the Python Emerging from the Mountain, creations of nature that approach the artistic whimsy of Cappadocia's fairy chimneys yet on a far grander scale. The West Coast Cliff Skywalk threads along kilometer-high precipices, evoking a sunlit cousin of Norway's Preikestolen, while seasonal highlights include rhododendron blooms in spring and cascading cloud seas in autumn—conditions that draw photographers worldwide. A short drive west brings you to Huaiyu Mountain, rising over 1,000 meters above a sweltering lowland summer. Cooler by nearly 10 degrees Celsius, this "Highland of the South" served as the final battleground for martyr Fang Zhimeng in 1935. His memorial and the Humble Garden commemorate a revolutionary legacy comparable to that of Greece's resistance sites, inviting reflection alongside forest bathing and oxygen-rich hiking trails through chestnut and pine groves. Twenty kilometers from the county seat, the Tianliang Scenic Area showcases one of Asia's largest natural stone bridges—a 71-meter-high arch spanning a karst labyrinth of sinkholes and underground rivers, somewhat reminiscent of Slovenia's celebrated bridges though entirely sculpted by water. Nearby Ming and Qing dynasty lanes of Qili Street retain blue-brick courtyard houses and the hilltop Wu'an Park, while the town itself is internationally dubbed the "Billiards Capital of the World," a curiosity where cue-sport culture permeates teahouses and corner stores alike. Practical planning centers on a 2–3 day itinerary. Take the Jinsha cable car up Mount Sanqing to walk the Sunshine Coast and West Coast trails on day one; devote day two to either Huaiyu Mountain or Tianliang. Spring and autumn offer optimal weather, though summer visitors should ascend at dawn and pack rain gear plus sun protection. High-speed rail connects directly to Yushan South Station from Shanghai and Hangzhou in two to three hours. County lodgings are plentiful and inexpensive, but carry small bills, as some family-run eateries still prefer cash. Why make the journey? Mount Sanqing delivers the visual punch of a geological masterwork, the contemplative depth of living Taoism, and the warm hospitality of a small Jiangxi town that has preserved its character amid China's rapid change.
