Wangxiangu Valley's transformation mirrors celebrated Western reclamation projects like Germany's Emscher Park in the Ruhr Valley, where rusting industrial scars were reborn as cultural landscapes. Until 2019, this 6.1-square-kilometer site was an abandoned granite quarry. A 2.6-billion-yuan investment converted the wounded terrain into a national destination, and in 2023 its Yanpu Old Street earned designation as a National Tourism Leisure Block—a recognition comparable to Britain's heritage conservation awards.
The architecture draws on Gan-northeastern vernacular traditions, with rammed-earth walls, soaring horse-head gables, and grey-tiled roofs that echo the silhouette of southern Chinese villages. Buildings cascade down the cliffside in tiers reminiscent of Italy's cave-dwelling town of Matera or Spain's hanging houses of Cuenca. The gravity-defying White Crane Cliff homestay, the Moon-Gazing Bridge, and the glass walkway threading through the gorge create a theatrical setting straight from a fantasy epic.
Wangxiangu serves as a living showcase of Jiangxi's intangible heritage. Craftspeople demonstrate traditional tofu-making and rice-wine brewing in workshops, while performances of the Twelve Nuo Masks, the spectacular molten-iron fireworks known as da tie hua, and bonfire evenings bring ancient folk customs to life. The Yang Mansion's "Double Ninth" immersive mystery play—a Chinese twist on escape-room theater—lets visitors step into a scripted historical narrative amid the mountains.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost 100 yuan on weekdays, 120 yuan on weekends, and 140 yuan on holidays; an evening ticket after 3:00 p.m. is just 80 yuan. Children under 1.2 meters and seniors over 70 enter free. Self-driving visitors should navigate to Wangxiangu Visitor Center, about one hour from Shangrao city, or take the direct shuttle from Shangrao Railway Station.
The ideal arrival window is 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., allowing time to explore the Three-Tiered Waterfall and Qingyun Bridge in daylight before the 6:30 p.m. illumination transforms the cliffs into a sea of lantern light. Reserve a spot at White Crane Cliff or Moon-Gazing Bridge for the most striking photographs. Cliffside homestays run 1,500–3,000 yuan per night with re-entry privileges and misty sunrise views, while guesthouses outside the park offer budget-friendly rooms from 200–400 yuan.
