Mudan Peak is not an ancient palace or battlefield, but a rare window onto the primeval forests of northeast Eurasia. Like the boreal landscapes of Scandinavia and Russia, its old-growth Korean red-pine woodland is shaped by long, severe winters and brief, vivid summers. The peak takes its name from the view that its outline resembles an open peony. As both a national forest park and protected reserve, it preserves habitats that once covered a much wider part of the region and stands as a defining natural symbol of Mudanjiang. The visitor experience begins on a 3 km wooden boardwalk winding through dense red pines, where birdsong and running water create a deep sense of quiet. Longtou Fountain remains clear and ice-free throughout the seasons, while Little Guilin presents weathered rock formations and forest clearings that evoke the famous limestone scenery of Guilin on a smaller scale. From designated picnic spots, the route moves gently before culminating at the 27 m Mudan Tower, whose viewing platform frames the city against an apparently endless green canopy. For visitors, the peony is more than a pretty floral shape. Long celebrated in Chinese art as a symbol of wealth, honor, and spring, it gives the mountain a cultural identity closely tied to Mudanjiang. Mudan Tower is a functional lookout rather than an ancient pagoda and far shorter than a medieval European cathedral tower, but its elevated panorama gives the forest memorable scale. On clear days, urban rooftops and wooded ridges create a striking contrast between the modern city and the surrounding wilderness. The park is about 15 km from central Mudanjiang and is listed as open all day; plan to explore between 6:30 and 18:00. Bus 24 and taxis are possible, though self-driving is easiest for combining the tower, fountain, and Little Guilin. From Qitaihe, allow 1.5–2 hours by high-speed train or coach to Mudanjiang, followed by a local transfer. Admission is typically CNY 10 in the low season and CNY 90 in the high season, with occasional free-entry periods. The tower may close in winter or for maintenance, so call 0453-6406735 before visiting. Allow three to five hours. May and June bring wild azaleas and Amur adonis flowers, while September and October turn the slopes into layers of red, gold, and russet, often accompanied by fields of cosmos. Summer is especially inviting, with daytime temperatures near 22°C and excellent conditions for forest walking. Arrive on a weekday morning, wear non-slip sports shoes, and carry water and snacks because facilities may be limited. Mobile reception can be weak, so download an offline map. Stay on marked trails and do not pick plants or disturb wildlife; the reserve’s quiet, restorative character is as compelling as any tower view.
