Opened in 2006 and developed by Haichang Ocean Park, Discover Kingdom was master-planned by the American firm RPVA—the same creative lineage that gave the world's theme-park industry its blockbuster entertainment formulas pioneered at American giants like Universal and Six Flags. After nearly two decades of continuous operation, the park has welcomed over 40 million guests, anchoring the recreational identity of Northeast China much as Tivoli Gardens defined Copenhagen in the 19th century or Blackpool Pleasure Beach anchored the British seaside a century ago.
The park's eight themed districts—Crazy Town, Mysterious Desert, Metal Factory, Magic Forest, Legend Castle, Fairy Garden, and others—evoke a kaleidoscopic European-styled streetscape that recalls the colorful facades of Bavaria's Neuschwanstein-inspired storybook villages, blended with retro steam-punk industrial design reminiscent of London's Victorian-era dockyards. A 7,000-square-metre indoor children's zone called Cool Mini World and a dedicated Ultraman-themed area extend the park's appeal across every age group, mirroring the multi-generational philosophy of successful European parks such as Legoland and Efteling.
The rides define Discover Kingdom's reputation among coaster enthusiasts across northern China. Three flagship coasters lead the line-up: the Thunder Chariot, plunging riders through a heart-stopping 90-degree vertical drop; the Heavenly Rotation, a suspended coaster that flips and whirls passengers beneath the track; and Crazy Cobra, a high-velocity launch coaster. Complementing these are a 50-metre twin-tower space shot, the Tsunami pirate ship swinging pendulum, and the atmospheric Tomb Raider horror walk-through experience.
Dalian itself, long celebrated as China's premier northern seaside resort with fine sandy beaches and a Russian-flavoured colonial heritage, provides the perfect natural counterpoint to the park's adrenaline-fuelled energy. Located about 50 kilometres east of the city centre within the Jinshitan National Tourist Resort, Discover Kingdom pairs naturally with a beach day, the nearby Discoveryland golf course, or the geological wonders of the Jinshi Beach coastline. The park typically operates from late morning until evening, with extended hours during summer and festival periods.
Practical visits are refreshingly straightforward: English-language maps are available at the entrance, credit cards and mobile payments are widely accepted, and lockers, dining courts, and shaded rest zones are scattered throughout. Visitors should plan a full day to experience the headline rides, catch one of the international-cast parades, and stay for the evening EDM-and-fireworks finale—an experience that has earned the park its nickname as the "Happiest Place in the Northeast."
