Its lower slopes embrace Zhongshan Park, founded in 1903 during the German colonial era that reshaped Qingdao as the Kiautschou Bay concession. The park's crown jewel is its open-air cable car, stretching 1,100 meters across the mountainside in a classic three-station loop reminiscent of Barcelona's Port Vell aerial tramway or Lisbon's hillside funiculars. A 7.9-kilometer barrier-free circuit trail encircles the entire park, designed for walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike. Comparable in ambition to Paris's Coulée Verte or New York's High Line, this ground-level route links seven themed gardens and notable stops including the Cherry Blossom Avenue, a tranquil Small West Lake, and the archaeological remains of Huiqian Village. Each turn reveals a fresh tableau—pavilions tucked among camphor trees, stone bridges arching over lotus ponds, and quiet benches commanding views toward the Yellow Sea.
The mountain rewards visitors in every season. April brings the celebrated cherry and azalea blooms, transforming the slopes into a pink-and-white spectacle that rivals Kyoto's Philosopher's Path. Summer temperatures hover around a refreshing 25°C (77°F), offering a natural escape from the humid lowlands. Autumn delivers crisp air and unmatched visibility, when the distant peaks of sacred Laoshan seem close enough to touch. Winter occasionally dusts the hillsides with snow, lending the European-style villas below a fairy-tale Alpine quality.
Admission to the park is free, with the greenway accessible 24 hours a day; only the cable car requires a separate ticket. The most convenient access is via Metro Line 3 to Zhongshan Park Station, followed by a seven-minute walk to the lower cable car station.
