Xingtai is one of North China's oldest cities, with archaeological traces of settlement stretching back roughly 3,500 years. During the Warring States period (475–221 BC), it served as the capital of the ancient state of Zhao, a fact locals take considerable pride in—comparable to how Italians might reference the Roman roots of Milan. The city later became a cradle of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, hosting the prominent Bailong Cave Temple complex in the Tang and Song dynasties. This deep heritage, however, often surprises Western visitors who arrive expecting only an industrial center. Xingtai Happy Water World, opened as part of the city's modern leisure-industry push, represents the contemporary chapter of a place whose story spans millennia. The park itself follows the formula familiar to anyone who has visited a major water park from Orlando to Dubai, but its scale and execution are tailored to a regional market. The centerpiece is a 3,000-square-meter wave pool that generates gentle surf, surrounded by sun loungers and palm-style landscaping. Adrenaline seekers gravitate toward the four-person funnel slide—locally called "the Big Horn"—and the rainbow racing slides that send riders down parallel lanes at speeds approaching 40 km/h. The lazy river winds through landscaped grottoes, while a dedicated children's area features mini-slides, fountains, and shallow pools shallow enough for toddlers. What distinguishes the park from its larger rivals is its evening entertainment program. From around 7 p.m., the central stage hosts water-themed performances combining synchronized fountains, lasers, EDM, and foam-bubble parties. The atmosphere is somewhere between a beach club on the Costa del Sol and a regional Chinese summer festival, with local university students forming a large share of the crowd. Photography is permitted throughout, and the lit-up slides make for striking night shots. Practical planning is essential. The park operates only during the summer high season, generally late June to late August, and hours shift with weather—always confirm via the official WeChat account or by phone before traveling. Lockers, changing rooms, and showers are available at the entrance, and trained lifeguards staff every ride zone. Bring your own swimsuit, swim cap, non-slip sandals, and a waterproof phone pouch; these items are sold on-site but at a markup. Food inside is limited to fast snacks and bottled drinks, so pack water and light snacks if you're on a budget. Guests with heart conditions, pregnant travelers, and anyone under the influence of alcohol are restricted from the bigger slides, and children must be accompanied at all times. For travelers visiting Xingtai outside summer months, the nearby "Hao Ke Happy Valley" inside the Garden Expo Park offers lighter family activities including climbing walls and mini-ziplines—a good substitute when the water park is closed. Alternatively, the larger Beijing Happy Valley or Tianjin Fantawild theme parks are reachable by high-speed rail in under two hours, making Xingtai a worthwhile base for a broader Hebei adventure. Xingtai's airport offers limited international service, so most Western visitors will arrive via Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport, about 70 km north, with frequent bullet trains onward.
