To Western visitors, Zhuge Liang (181–234 AD) is the Chinese counterpart of figures like Machiavelli or Bismarck—a master statesman and military genius whose life unfolded during one of history's most romanticized conflicts, the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD). Much as Renaissance Florence built monuments to its legendary figures, Xiangyang has honored its famous resident with this monumental public space.
