Its narrative thread is the river itself, beginning with a monumental relief of Da Yu, the mythic flood-controller whose legend echoes the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh epic and the Biblical deluge story. Standing where once aircraft taxied, visitors now encounter a sweeping civic canvas that bridges prehistory and modern China. The surrounding architectural trio gives the plaza its distinctive silhouette. The Bengbu Convention Centre, with its curving form suggesting both an infinity symbol and an unfurled historical scroll, evokes the ambition of contemporary Chinese civic architecture, recalling in spirit the sweeping geometries of London's City Hall or Foster's Reichstag dome. Across the plaza, the modern, elegant Grand Theatre hosts opera and touring productions, while the neighbouring Science Library combines learning halls with public reading rooms, a reminder that civic knowledge remains a Chinese cultural pillar, much like the great lending libraries of Victorian Britain. Cultural symbolism is woven throughout. Replicas of Neolithic pottery heads from the nearby Shuangdun archaeological site connect the square to communities flourishing here seven millennia ago, while statues of Laozi, Zhuangzi, and the Han-era thinker Liu An (author of the Huainanzi) remind visitors that this region birthed profound strands of Eastern philosophy. After dark on weekends and holidays, choreographed musical fountains dance beneath coloured lights, offering the kind of spectacle that recalls the Bellagio in Las Vegas or the nightly illumination shows at Barcelona's Magic Fountain, but with a distinctly Chinese civic warmth. Visitors should plan to arrive in the late afternoon and stay into the evening to escape the daytime heat and enjoy both sunset views and the fountain performance. Entry is free, though the theatre, library, and any special exhibitions have their own opening hours and ticketing. The surrounding Huaxia First Block and Baolong City Plaza gather Bengbu's signature street foods, including shaobing stuffed with fried pork, hearty noodle bowls, and the city's famously peppery crayfish, well worth building into an evening itinerary. Travellers relying on public transport will find buses 102 and 109 convenient; rideshares and the metro are impractical here, so walking or a short taxi ride from a central hotel works best.
