Peonies have flourished in the Heze region since the Sui and Tang dynasties (6th–10th centuries CE), reaching commercial scale under the Ming and Qing. By the Qianlong Emperor's reign in the 18th century, "Caozhou peonies were praised as unrivaled under heaven," a horticultural reputation rivaling the tulip mania that swept 17th-century Holland or the rose mania of Victorian England. The aesthetic echoes the symmetry of Versailles, yet replaces formal parterres with the exuberant, painterly sweep of an East Asian scroll painting brought to life. In Chinese symbolism, the peony—designated the national flower—embodies wealth, honor, and prosperity, akin to how Western gardens have historically celebrated the rose. Heze is the cultural custodian of this floral icon, hosting the annual International Peony Cultural Tourism Festival that draws visitors from across the globe. A maturing deep-processing industry has transformed the bloom into culinary delicacies, cosmetics, and health oils, making the peony a rare cultural symbol uniting ornamental, edible, and economic value. Peak bloom runs April 10–25, when the flower fields become a chromatic symphony. Caozhou Peony Garden holds a 4A national rating and the Guohua Garden a 3A rating, both offering multilingual smart guides. During the festival, visitors enjoy the open-air water spectacle "Caozhou Song," Hanfu costume experiences, and the celebrated Peony Banquet—petals starring in delicate soups, pastries, and teas. Heze lies roughly three hours by car from Jinan Yaoqiang Airport, with ride-hailing widely available within the city. Off-season visitors (August is pleasant for this) should explore the Guose Fanghua Hall's all-season greenhouse, the peony seed-oil processing line, and the Heze City Museum to trace the full cultural and industrial arc.
